NEW MACHINE AIDS PASTURE CONTROL
A new implement known as a “slasher” has proved most effective in the destruction of variegated thistle and for cutting the rank growth off pasture grasses in many parts of Australia. It can be used on stony or uneven ground where a mower could not operate, and demonstrations have shown that it should be very useful in the control of bracken fern. The acting principal agronomist of the New South Wales Department of Agriculture, Mr G. Nicholson, said that the implement consists of a heavy concave disc to which are attached a number of heavy, case-hardened chains. It is used attached to a tractor, and is driven by the power take-off. The disc and chains revolve at high speed, cutting a nine-ft. swathe. The implement cannot be used on low-speed tractors. In a demonstration at Merriwa, variegated thistles up to eight feet high had been smashed and lacerated by the "slasher” and when the residue from the thistle began to dry out, it was readily eaten by stock.
