THOMPSON HANDICAP AT TRENTHAM

RACING

Third Successive Win For South Island Likely

Attempts to engage the leading Auckland jockey, N. B. Holland, for Field Chief in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham today have been unsuccessful. Holland is be»'ng held to an engagement to ride The Vandal, one of the lightweights in the second leg of the double on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting. No rider had been engaged for Field Chief yesterday. R. J. Skelton, who was announced as his jockey earlier in the week, will be on Pinnacle Ridge, a smart Foxton mare and probably the North Island’s best prospect. But a third successive win for the South Island in the Thompson Handicap looks likely. At earlier meetings at Trentham this season. South Island gallopers have dominated open races over this distance. Field Chief and Adversary won the two mile races in October, and Watch and Wait. Desperado, and Pack Drill won in January. All but Adversary are engaged today, and their ranks are strengthened by Copenhagen, Mighty Dollar, end Silver King, good campaigners with attractive form backgrounds. Copenhagen became one of the early Thompson Handicap favourites when he won the Kinloch Handicap at Motukarara last Saturday. A better Trentham trial could not have been wished for. and Mr D. W. J. Gould’s chestnut probably benefited from the race, his first since January. Mighty Dollar had been longer away from racing when he appeared at Motukarara. so his Kinloch Handicap fourth was satisfactory. He is expected to be one of Copenhagen’s most formidable rivals. Sonnetary Favourite Sonnetary is the ruling favourite for the £5OOO Autumn Handicap. His performance will attract attention bevond New Zealand, because he was heavily backed early last week for the Sydney Cup, for which he is now second favourite. Sonnetary has yet to win over two miles, but his second in the Wellington Cup and fourth in the Auckland Cup this season have been performances of a stayer. He has won twice since he last raced at Trentham, and is now only 81b below Deceptive, a hardy Alonzo gelding which is also certain to be one of his strongest opponents. Sonnetary will not find it easy to concede lUb to Llanisfair and 151 b to the Riccarton-trained Calcutta Sweep. This will be Calcutta Sweep’s last race for the season. Up to a mile and a half he has shaped like a true stayer and from his position in the handicap he should run on at the end of a hard-run race. Mandrake, Ali Shah, and Gallant Peter have dropped out of the Ngaio High-weight. The class is not strong, and the free-going Flying Dragon may be able to record his second win for the season on the course. Flying Dragon won the corresponding race on Wellington Cup day. Peony is not a certain starter in the Plunket Nursery Handicap, but Fancy Dress, with which she was bracketed, will still make a Hawke s Bay victory a strong -possibility. Shahwan has firmed in favour with attractive trials at Trentham. and should have better luck than he did there in January when he pulled up sore after the Wellington Stakes. Challenge Stakes

Golden Tan has been scratched for the North Island Challenge Stakes. < and Jollette will probably drop out < of the field unless track conditions ; change. z It is generally considered that the ( three-year-olds, Syntax and Coleridge, ( will dominate the finish, but the South Island horses. Ray Ribbon and 1 Ma Reine. could also play big roles. J Desert Cloud, a winner with a good i deal in hand at Motukarara, may fare ; equally well against stronger oppo- ■ sition in the Tinakori Handicap. Ric- < carton’s best will probably be Merri- ( mayes, a comfortable winner over this ( distance at Masterton. Xixies and I Absent, both winners at their last < starts, are regarded as the best of the North Island hacks. # Summersette is a firm pre-post favourite for the Railway Handicap, 1 but Arganda gained supporters with ! an outstanding sprint at Trentham , on Thursday. Alonsun, a stoutly-bred three-year-old from J. E. McDonald’s Te < Awamutu stable, may improve a promising record in the Silverstream l Handicap. Two starts ago. Alonsun ( toyed with some smart gallopers at \ the end of a mile and a half in : the Frankton High-weight at Te Rapa. . Last week, he was a rather unlucky < third over seven furlongs at Franklin. G. F. Hughes will ride Alonsun. a < bay gelding by Alonzo from Solicita- : tion. Selections:— ( 11.30 a.m.—Ngaio High-weight: Flying < Dragon, Horatius bracket.
