CURRENT NOTES
The executive of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Navy League entertained the Chief of Naval Staff < Rear-Admiral J. E. H. Mcßeath) and Mrs Mcßeath, at a late afternoon reception at Elizabeth House, yesterday. Mrs Mcßeath wore a slimfitting emerald green frock patterned in a black conventional design, and a black cloche hat. Rear-Admiral McBeath is paying his first official visit to Christchurch. The Cholmondeley Memorial Children's Home has reopened after the annual holiday period. This was reported at the monthly meeting of the committee. The home opened with a large number of admissions and a steady number of applications is being made for admission. Letters of thanks have been received by the matron (Miss I. Clark) from parents expressing their appreciation. Many of the children admitted recently were children of sick mothers, or mothers in need of a rest. Maintenance carried out on the home while it was closed included repainting several rooms and the passage-ways. The recent concert presented to members of the Sydenham Pensioners’ Friendly Club was compered by Mrs H. Middleton. The artists were Mesdames Maisie Collins, O. Gee, Joyce Scott and Miss Beryl Gough.
The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Sight Saving Class Parent-Teacher Association:—President, Mr B. Carlisle; vicepresident, Mrs J. E. Hurdley; secretary, Mrs L. W. Blain; treasurer. Mr E. Harris; committee, Messrs C. Glanville, N. D. Hili, F. Ward and H. Tomlinson, Mesdames W. Sellars and R. Dacombe.
Mrs McConnell has beer re-elected president of the ladies’ auxiliary of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A. Other officers elected were: vice-presidents, Mesdames Clay, Burrell, and Miss C. Rogers; secretary, Mrs Greenway; treasurer, Mrs I. Watson; house committee, Mesdames McConnell and Down; delegate to the National Council of Women. Miss M. Webster; hostesses. Mrs Hope and Mrs Burrell. Mr A. Watson expressed his appreciation to Mrs McConnell and helpers for raising funds to recondition furnishings in the building. Sympathy was expressed with the general secretary <Mr M. Betts), in his recent bereavement.
The report presented at the annual meeting of the St. David’s Young Wives’ Group said that there were 110 members on the roll, and 77 attended meetings regularly. A new group had recently been formed at the other end of the parish by Mrs C. L. Dobbs. The following officers were elected: leader, Mrs C. F. Truscott; secretary, Mrs Robertson; treasurer, Mrs Riley; committee, Mesdames Rowe, Chisholm, Pitt. L. Smith, R. Burley. Hearne. McKinstry. Bishop and Duncan; librarian, Mrs*Thomson; assistant-librarian. Mrs D. Smith; to report on activities, Mrs Whittington. The vicar (the Rev. C. L. Dobbs) gave a short address.
A talk entitled “Welfare Work with the Mentally Sick” was given by the Rev. J. Ellis at the monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the League of Mothers. Members agreed to support a fair arranged by the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women. Mrs H. McDougall presided. Mrs H. Owles and Mrs J. Forward were in charge of the creche.
Circle leaders presented reports at the monthly meeting of the Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild. Members were reminded of the combined guilds’ picnic to be held at Woodend. A talk on the work of the Good Neighbour Service of the North Canterbury Red Cross Society was given by Mrs H. Wales.
The report of the CORSO women’s sewing guild presented at the first annual meeting said that during the year 917 garments had been made, ana 775 had been packed and sent to their destinations. Besides making clothes, members have been kept busy with mending and darning. Mrs R. W. Wornall, who presided, said that persons interested in the work being undertaken by the guild would be welcomed to the monthly meetings. Miss Conston. of the Department of Agriculture, distributed patterns and working directions for attractive easily-made gifts at the first meeting of the year of the Home Economics Association's needlecraft circle. Miss u y as presented with a paua shell brooch as a token of appreciation. Mrs R. W. Borland presided. Miss W. Delugar. who retired last v eek from the position of matron-in-chief of the Auckland Hospital Board was presented with a sterling silver engraved tray from the medical staff of the board.
