NEGOTIATIONS TO BUY JOHN BISCOE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 8. The Ross Sea Committee was satisfied that the John Biscoe —an 890-ton war-time boom net layer—was suitable for transporting the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition to McMurdo Sound, said the chairman of the committee. (Mr C. M. Bowden) today. Negotiations for the purchase of the John Biscoe by the committee were proceeding. Information from London had satisfied the committee that the ship was suitable for the purpose in mind, said Mr Bowden. American built in 1944. the John Biscoe was specially improved in Britain for use in Antarctic waters. Sheathed in green heart timber as hard as steel, the ship had given satisfactory service in the Falkland Island Dependencies. Last September, a Lloyd’s survey certified the vessel as being in satis*factory condition apart from some minor defects. These defects would be attended to before purchase, said Mr Bowden.
