Canterbury’s Showing In Moffat Cup

The Canterbury representative in the Moffat Cup Air Raid (Owen Reid), did well to finish third in the series after scoring badly in the first three races in light conditions which did not suit it. Air Raid’s placings in the five races at Wellington were: seventh, fourth, fifth, third and first. Canterbury should have won the fourth race. When Air Raid was leading. the hiking straps, by which the crew retain their hold when leaning out-board to balance the craft, broke and two of the crew of three fell overboard. By the time they regained the boat it was half swamped and had to be pumped out. Shrewd tactics by Reid, when approaching the finish’ gave Air Raid the fifth race. Nelson and Canterbury were almost level nearing the end of the race, when Reid pretended he was going to go about, duping the Nelson skipper into doing so. Air Raid came through to win by a second.
