R. WILLIAMS LEADING AFTER FIRST DAY A. G. LAWLESS 221 POINTS BEHIND (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 9. The title-holder, A. G. Lawless (Otago), is 221 points behind the leader, R. Williams (Auckland), at the end of the first day’s competition in the New Zealand decathlon championship, which began at Auckland today. The other visiting competitor, J. Hawkes (Otago), is 145 points behind Lawless. A first-half tally of 3554 gives Williams every opportunity of bettering his best New Zealand performance of 6031, established last week. Williams established the best performance of the competition in the long jump (21ft 93in), shot put (40ft Gin), and high jump (sft lOin). His 10) metres time of 11.4 sec was equalled by both Lawless and Hawkes. Lawless obtained top points in the 400 metres with a run of 50.7 sec. The pi ogress score at the end of five events today was: R. Wil'iams (Auckland), ."554 points; A. G. Lawless (Otago), 3333; J. Hawkes (Otago), 3198: M. Hay (Auckland). 2521; R. Patton (Auckland), 2330. CANTERBURY COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS J. D. Macdonald won the mile in 4min 27sec when the Canterbury University College athletic championships started last evening. A former New Zealand University champion, P. H. Barnett, set the pace to within 100 yards of the finish. The championships will be Concluded today. Results:— One Mile.—J. D. Macdonald 1. P. H. Dillimore (Technical) has been added to the Canterbury team for the New Zealand athletic championships to be held at Lancaster Park on Friday and Saturday of next week.
