BATTERY POULTRY SYSTEM

Sir, —I rejoiced to read the letter of “Pity the Hens” and see that someone has a feeling heart for those feathered friends. For friends they indeed are—we would fare very badly without their eggs—and it behoves us not to treat them just as laying machines but to give them a reasonable amount of happiness in their lives. Luckily, some poultrykeepers do this and give them fields in which to peck and scratch for part of each day, and I am sure they are repaid by getting eggs of better flavour and colour.— Yours, etc., HELP THE HELPLESS.
