PROGRESS LEAGUE SECRETARY

Resignation Of Mr T. M. Charters MR D. W. BAIN CHOSEN AS SUCCESSOR Mr T. M. Charters, for seven years secretary of the Canterbury Progress League and for 21 years a member of the league, has resigned from the secletaryship. His resignation waj accepted by the league last evening, after the executite had discussed the matter in committee for an hour and 10 minutes. Later, it was announced that Mr D. W. Bain had been appointed secretary. After all the items on the agenda

paper had been dealt with, the president (Mr E. C. Bathurst) announced Mr Charters’s intention to retire. “Since our last meeting we have received the resignation of our secretary,” said Mr Bathurst. “You will remember that a sub-committee was appointed some time ago to consider several matters, and this sub-commit-tee now has a recommendation to make. It has found that we will have to cut down drastically on our finances.” he said. At this stage, the meeting went into committee. When proceedings were resumed in open meeting. Mr H. E. Radley moved that the report of the sub-committee should be made available to the press, and the executive agreed. The report was as follows: “The committee set up by the league to consider the general organisation of the league met on several occasions“Mr Charters intimated to the committee that he proposed to resign u secretary-organiser, and it was «r--ranged with him that his resignation would take place on March 31. 1956The committee went into the question of filling the position, and after considering prospective applicants decided that Mr D. W. Bain, secretary of the Overseas League and chairman of the Canterbury University College Council, should be appointed.” A motion that Mr Charters be thanked for his services to the league was carried. Mr Charters joined the league three years after its incention. Since then he has held every office on the executive.

Asked after the meeting whether he would remain a member of the league, Mr Charters said he did not know. “After I finish. I do not know if I will have time to continue as a member. I have been invited to attend meetings, but whether I will I do not know,” said Mr Charters.
