SEVERE EPIDEMIC IN ARGENTINA

IRON LUNGS SENT FROM U.S. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, March 6. The “New York Times” said today that the State Department and other organisations were mobilising their resources to rush “all available iron lungs to Argentina” to cope with a serious epidemic of poliomyelitis. A report to the newspaper from Washington said there had been a demand in Buenos Aires last week for 150 iron lungs. A report to the “New York Times” from Buenos Aires said that new cases averaging more than 50 a day were being reported in Buenos Aires and suburbs. The total number of cases recorded since January 1 was 848. The death rate was said to have been 12.7 per cent. To help combat the epidemic 20 iron lungs were being sent from Uruguay, together with medical and nursing assistants.
