COMBINED LENTEN SERVICES

RICCARTON CHURCHES’ INNOVATION The Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in the Riccarton district have held combined Wednesday evening Lenten services for the last three weeks, and congregations have increased at each service. The experiment in united services during Lent is regarded by the clergy concerned as an encouraging advance in the ecumenical movement. In Upper Riccarton, services are held alternatively at St. Peter’s Anglican and the Riccarton Methodist Churches; and alternate services in the Riccarton borough are in St. James’ Anglican and St. Ninian’s Presbyterian Churches. When a service is held at St. Peter’s Church, the vicar (the Rev. H. G. Norris) conducts the service, and the Methodist minister of the Riccarton area (the Rev. J. D. Grocott) preaches the sermon. When the service is held in the Riccarton Methodist Church Mr Grocott conducts the service, and Mr Norris preaches the sermon. The vicar of St. James’ Church (the Rev. F. Allen) and the Minister of St. Ninian’s Church (the Rev. R. J. . Griffiths) exchange in a similar way.!
