TRENTHAM TRACK WORK

PLEASING TRIAL BY SONNETARY

SPRINT HONOURS TO BUGLE BOY , "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, March 6. None of the Autumn Handicap candidates which worked at Trentham this morning impressed more than Sonnetary. Accompanied by Arganda, he recorded the best time for seven furlongs. His rivals on Saturday, Llanisfair and Merry Legs, also acquitted themselves well under restraint. The best trials during the morning were performed over shorter distances, Bugie Boy showing brilliance over half a mile. Roving Boy. Hot Drop. Genre, and Jollette also showed speed. Two candidates for the North Island Challenge Stakes. Syntax and Coleridge, were comoanions throughout half a mile. Without being taxed, they returned useful time. Most galloping took place on the trial grass, which provided perfect going. Sonnetary (Haitana) ran easily from the nine furlongs to the seven, where he picked up Arganda (Forward). The pace was increased, and they came home in lmin 31 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 53 2-a sec, and the final three furlongs in 39sec. Galloping boldly, Arganda opened up a big lead to the straight, but Sonnetary finished like a true stayer, and he was on terms at the post, finishing on strongly. He looks as well as he did before the Wellington Cup, in which he finished second, and he should race well this week. Arganda will be respected in the Railway Handicap because of his good form at the summer meeting. In a working gallop over a mile. Llanisfair (Nuttall) and Merry Legs (Holland) were together throughout, running the last seven furlongs in lmin 33sec. They came from the half-mile in 53sec, and from the three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. Llanisfair is muscular, and looks more solid than on his last visit to Trentham. He has raced well enough in the nortn in his recent starts to warrant respect in the Autumn Handicap. Merry Legs did his work comfortably. He has been placed in his two latest starts, but will have to be taken on trust over Saturday’s distance. Challenge Stakes Rivals Syntax (Holland) and Coleridge (McFarlane) ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec, the final three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Coleridge showed out early, but Syntax made a dab inside the furlong, and drew on terms. Coleridge then made an extra effort, and had a slight advantage at the end. It was pleasing work, as Coleridge does not show his best in training. Syntax is not carrying any surplus condition, and looks in the same order as when he won the Gloaming and Trentham Stakes at the summer meeting. The best half-mile was credited to Bugle Boy (Wylie), which established an early lead on Can-Can (G. Smith) ana beat her by four lengths to record 49 4-5 sec. The final three furlongs took 37scc. Bugle Boy hit out freely, and has recovered from the soreness which restricted his action at Levin. He has a handy barrier position in the Tinakori Hack Handicap. Can-Can has taken no harm from her Masterton outing, but she may be more at home over a longer distance than seven furlongs. Hot Drop (Nuttall) finished on solidly to be slightly ahead of Roving Boy (Haitana) after running five furlongs in lmin 5 2-ssec. The last half-mile took 51 1-5 sec, and the final three furlongs 37 l-ssec. Hot. Drop has been a big disappointment this season. Though he was intended to only do strong pace work. Genre (Wylie) ran from the half-mile in 50sec. the final three furlongs in 36 l-ssec. He has thrived since he was successful at Masterton last week, but he has a big handicap to overcome from No. 28 at the barrier in the Tinakori.Hack Handicap. Jollette (G. Smith), with an advantage in weight, was too good for Feint (Harris) and Raglan (McFarlane) over a half a mile, finishing a length in front and recording 50sec. The final three furlongs took 37 2-ssec. Jollette is a consistent filly, and she should have prospects in the Plunket Nursery Handicap. Tehrana (Holland) sprinted three furlongs in 37sec. Hilili (Harris) was not after time while running half a mile in 58sec. She increased the pace to run from tne three furlongs in 41sec. The stablemates Shaun (Holland) and Pierre (Perawiti) were together throughout half a mile in 52 l-ssec, the final three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. Both worked keenly. Shaun is not without prospects from his inside barrier position in the Thompson Handicap. Yoho (McFarlane) was let off with an easy half-mile in 54 4-ssec. coming from the three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. His outing at Masterton has improved him. His Thompson Handicap prospects will be enhanced if there is more rain. Alonsun (McFarlane) completed pace work by galloping easily from the three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. He is a bold galloper. and should be best suited by time.

However, his recent form warrants his being respected in the Silverstream Hack Handicap, the distance of which should suit him. On the plough, which was heavy in places, Idaho (McFarlane) completed two rounds of pace work by running from i the three furlongs in 39sec. He has taxen no harm from his successful outing at i Masterton. i Finito, which was narrowly beaten by I Idaho last week, was restricted to pace work. He looks all the better for that I race. He has run some of his„-best races at Trentham, and has a handy weight 1 in the Autumn Handicap.
