WORK OF CORSO IN GREECE

Although Greek feeling at the moment clashes with British government policy in Cyprus, individual Britons and particularly New Zealanders remain popular, said Mr S. Garland, Greek Vice-consul in New Zealand, who recently revisited his native land after 50 years.

“I was repeatedly told about the gentlemanly and helpful conduct of all New Zealand soldiers, without any exception. No Greek home had ever regretted giving a New Zealander hospitality. And I was repeatedly thanked for the outstanding help that New Zealand has since the war given through CORSO. Greece is a very poor nation that had not recovered from the German invasion before large parts were again devastated, first by Communist attack and then by earthquakes. One third of the eight million population still lives on under £3 a week,” said Mr Garland.
