SABA WINS SOUNDLY AT MOTUKARARA

RACING

Saba had a well-earned first win in open company in the Peninsula Handicap at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s summer meeting at Motukarara on Saturday. He finished brilliantly from the tail of the small field and won untos*ed hv a length and a half from another light-weight. Bon Soir It was a winning race trial by Saba for the Wellington Racing Club’s Autumn Handicap next Saturday. Calcutta Sweep was also attempting to achieve that feat, and was recarded as more likely to do so. But this Roval Chief gelding could not find racing room on the inner in the straight and finished an unlucky fourth, three and a half lengths behind Saba.

This was Calcutta Sweep’s first race since th* s Wellington Cup meeting and it should have had considerable value in conditioning him for his first test over two miles this week.

Saba was confidently ridden by A. J. Stokes, who had a further notable success by winning the Kinloch Handicap. the second leg of the double, on Copenhagen. Copenhagen showed gameness of a high order to beat the favourite. Clinker, by a head. He raced close to the lead in a fast-run race, and Stokes was hurrying him along to hold his position before the home turn was reached. His chance looked remote when Clinker ran powerfully into the lead inside the furlong, but Mr D. W. J. Gould’s game chestnut responded generously and mastered the Mosgiel galloper when the post was near. It was a smart Thomoson Handicap trial by Copenhagen, which was having his first success since the Jockey Club Handicap at the last New Zealand Cup meeting. He had also been twice second in his other six starts this season.

Copenhagen was the 5. 7 favourite in a field of 11 and only ninth favourite with the holders of 5056 J 10s tickets on Saba in the first leg. The SabaCopenhagen combination carried 552 5s tickets and paid £lll Ils 6d for £l. Clinker is an acceptor for the Railway Handicap and Mighty Dollar, the Kinloch Handicap fourth, a candidate for the Thompson Handicap on the first day at Trentham.

A. J. Stokes finished the day with three winners. He also won the Eradley Stakes on Hay Time, a three-year-old owned by Mr D. W. J. Gould and a stablemate of Copenhagen. Copenhagen and Hay Time are trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson, who shared training honours for the day with J. A. Wilson and H. J. Powell, Wingatui, who were successfully represented by Swayalong in the Terawera High-weight, and Desert. Cloud in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. This pair also have engagements at Trentham.

Desert Cloud was confidently ridden by the leading horseman, R. J. Skelton. Times were fast on a hard, dusty track. The attendance was good. The on-course totalisator turnover was £39.367 10s, including £3606 10s on the double, compared with £38.690 last year. First Leg Ngapunawai soon ran clear in the Peninsula Handicap and set a solid pace, cutting out the first two furlongs in 26 l-ssec and the first five in Imin 2 4-ssec. Overboard. Demand, and Cornflake raced in line behind Ngapunawai clear of Bon Soir and Calcutta Sweep. Until half a mile out Saba was tailed off four lengths behind Calcutta Sweep, though he had closed that gap near the home turn. N. Eastwood had Calcutta Sweep on the inner behind the front bunch. He had hopes of a run on the inner when Cornflake moved away slightly from the rails on the turn, but could not find room after straightening. Ngapunawai was feeling the strain outside the furlong, and in the next instant Cornflake was battling vainly to hold his lead. Saba was at the height of a powerful run wider out on the track. It carried him powerfully into the lead inside the furlong and on to a decisive win from Bon Soir. which got up to beat Cornflake by a length. Calcutta Sweep was another length back fourth—a creditable placing considering the bad run he had from the turn. The weakening Ngapunawai was a length and a half back fifth. Demand was four lengths back sixth, obviously unable to do himself justice on the firm ground. Overboard was another length away. Torrid Finish The favourite. Clinker, looked to have the Kinloch Handicap in hand at the half furlong, but he was worn down in the last few strides by Copenhagen. Merriment set a blistering pace to the straight. Copenhagen was alongside the trailing Clinker for a time, but behind him running to the home turn. There Mighty Dollar was improving his position alongside Okaruru, and Tess was entering the picture close by. Clinker was galloping easily as he drew up to Merriment nearing the furlong, and his chance looked bright when he strode to the lead. But Skelton was calling on him for his best a moment later when Cooenhagen challenged on the inner. Clinker’s best was not good enough to give him his second successive win in the race. Copenhagen kept up a dogged run under a hard ride and won by a head. Tess and Mighty Dollar were running on for third and fourth places, separated by a neck. Okaruru was fifth a length and a half back, and Desperado improved a few places for sixth.

Paulette was an undistinguished seventh and was followed home by Strato. Then there was a gap to the weakening Merriment. Royal Warrant was next, and Rio Negro finished at the rear. Strong Challenge Hay Time, a three-year-old half-brother to King s Fair, decisively won the Bradley Stakes, for which he was favourite. He challenged strongly from a trailing position early in the run home, and opened up a lead none of the others could bridge Inside the last furlong. Purser made ground on the outer from the home turn for second, but was two and a half lengths from Hay Time, which was ridden out.

Purser was about five places back at the end of a furlong. He followed Whistlin’ Thru, Pennant, and Hay Time round the home turn, and ran past Pennant into second place near the furlong Pennant weakened after disputing the lead, and was a length and a half back third. He had to be kept going to hold that position from the faster-finishing Innesfell.

Innesfell was in one of the trailing positions early but gave a little ground going to the half-mile. Her run from the turn from the fourth was a good one. It was a promising debut. Yolita, a half-sister to Mv Hero, Bruce, and Royal Tan. and Innesfell’s bracketed mate, was beaten off fifth, but she showed speed after a slow start, which left her towards the tail of the field after a furlong. Breccia was sixth, making no improvement from the turn. The fourth favourite. Bonny Pippin, was one of the slow beginners. Favourite Destroyed Holders of tickets worth £1354 10s on the favourite. Sole Mio, in the Terawera High-v.eight lost their chance five furlongs out. There Mr L. W. Timperlev’s Sun Kins five-year-old gelding faltered and nulled up with a fractured near hind fetlock joint. He was destroved Sole Mio had been racing alongside Columban m the lead. Gallant Peter then joined Columban in front, and they came to the straight just ahead of Sun Up. and Tarantella, with Swayalong and Royal Display at the rear but handy.

Tarantella ran rather wide on straightenmg up. but responded well and mastered the leaders inside the furlong. She held a short lead 40 vards from the post but went under by a heTd to solid yalOnB, whose run the turn was

Royal Display got up to beat Gallant Peter by a length for third, but he w T as a length and a half behind Tarantella. Columban was fifth a length .and a half back, and well clear of Sun Up. Neat Win Desert Cloud was solidly backed for the Ahuriri Hack Handicap and she won neatly by half a length, and with much in reserve from Airscol, which she trailed to the straight. R. J. Skelton had Desert Cloud in a trailing position behind Airscol and Dart Away from the start. Jesse James was alongside Desert Cloud going to the half mile, and Curtain Raiser was making ground behind them. Airscol had Dart Away beaten outside the furlong and shook off a challenge from Curtain Raiser, but she could not cope with Desert Cloud’s challenge.

Philadelphia impoved a few places from the home turn for third a length behind Airscol. The weakening Curtain Raiser was a length back fourth, just beating Dart Away and the improving Iroquoi. Jesse James was next in a gap ahead of Detection, Gold Trend, Count de Reszke. Mananui and Matutina. Maninui and Matutina were the slowest beginners. This was a winning race trial by Desert Cloud for the Tinakori Hack Handicap at Trentham next Saturday. Philadelphia, Gold Trend, and Curtain Raiser are also acceptors for that race, run over seven furlongs, the same distance as the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. Goldwyn Strikes Form Goldwyn had a well-earned first win for the season in the Parkinson Hack Handicap. He challenged strongly in the straight and won by a length going away from the Oamaru hack, Santee, which was clear at the furlong. Goldwyn was one of the best beginners, and N. Eastwood had him in the middle of the field after a furlong. There Kanuka was clear, but was joined later by Strada. Cristatus and Santee were trailing at the half mile • and Goldwyn and Solstice were following ahead of Happy, which had given ground on the inner.

Kanuka was done after straightening and Santee ran past Cristatus and Strada to reach the lead going to the furlong. Goldwyn came into the picture then and sustained a solid run for his decisive win.

Happy did well to get up for third a length and a half behind Santee. He came from well back for that place. Hunt the Slipper also did well to get up for fourth; he was one of the slowest beginners. The weakening Strada was a length back fifth and a length and a hail clear of Cristatus. Solstice was next, two lengths back, with Smuggles and Kanuka at the rear. < Results:— BRADLEY STAKES, of £3OO. Six furlongs.—l, 1 D. W. J. Joy Step, which is trained at Paeroa, scored a popular success in the Franklin Cup, the first leg of the double at the Franklin Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Pukekohe yesterday. Joy Step was handily placed to the home turn, and ran on gamely to beat the favourite, Mt. Denby, by a length. The second leg, the Pukekohe Handicap, was won by another Paeroa-trained horse. Black Seaman. The double dividend was £219 17s 6d for £l. Mangatoki caused a big upset when he won the Fulton Memorial Hack Handicap. Fifteenth favourite in a field of 16, he paid £l2O 10s 6d for a win. It was Mangatoki’s fourth start in eight days. The weather was fine, and the track fast. The totalisator on course handled £95,496 (including £12,603 on doubles), against £86,568 IDs last year.
