Newcastle United, the Football Association Cup holders, were ousted from the competition in today’s quarter-finals after a run of 14 cup ties without loss. They fell 2-0 at home to their northeastern neighbours, Sunderland. The second division club. West Ham United, for whom the tall inside left John Dick scored all three goals, almost pulled off the shock of the round when they led the fancied Tottenham Hotspur team 3-2 well into the second half. With only 15 minutes to go, centre-forward Len Dukuemin headed home to equalise and give Spurs another chance. The other semi-finalists are .Manchester .City, last year’s beaten finalists, who beat Everton 2-1, and Birmingham, who scored a 3-1 away win over Arsenal. Well over 250,000 spectators watched the four matches. Clyde, holders of the Scottish Cup, got through to the semi-finals by scoring three second-half goals without reply after their opponents, Queen of the South, had led 2-1 at half-time.
