Three Country Teams Win Matches With Town

LAWN TENNIS

Country teams won three of the six senior matches against Town teams and all the five junior matches when the annual Town-Country fixture was held at Wilding Park on Saturday. Altogether 224 players took part in senior and junior sections. Because Country won four of the six senior matches last season, it seemed a pity that Town teams this season did not include many prominent senior club players. There was only one senior man who plays top for his club—B. R. Crawford. On the other hand the opportunity was given to many players who would not otherwise play in a representative match. It is a good indication of the numerical strength of tennis in Christchurch that it is able to put six senior teams of 12 and five or six junior teams of eight into the field each year for this meeting. Mid-Canterbury, Malvern and Ellesmere won their senior matches, but Town beat North Canterbury, Hurunui ana Banks Peninsula. In the junior section the five winning teams were Mid-Can-terbury, Ellesmere, North Canterbury. Malvern and Banks Peninsula.

The Mid-Canterbury men, led by a former North Otago player, K. Familton. gave a good performance to win all their singles but one. Although his service, hit with a short backswing, was not very formidable, Familton played sound ground strokes and moved to the net at every opportunity to beat the top member of the Town team. P. M. Wilson, 9-6. Both were aggressive, but Familton, forceful on the forehand, took a lead at 4-3 which he held. Miss S. Field (Town) was too strong in driving and determination for her MidCanterbury opponent. Miss P. Cullen. Keeping a better length deep to the base - line. Miss Field kept Miss Cullen usually on the defence. She won, 9-2. One of the most promising Country players was the young top man for Hurunui, T. Smith who beat S. Bullen by superior placement and clever variations of length and direction. Smith won, 9-3. Even though Bullen retrieved well he was often forced out of court. Results:— SENIOR Town v.
