CANTERBURY SENIOR TITLE MEETING

ATHLETICS

Although only one provincial record was broken when the Canterbury senior athletic championships were concluded at Rugby Park on Saturday, the standard of attainment was reasonably high and the many close finishes made the efficiently run meeting a thoroughly interesting one. M. D. Watson broke the javelin throw record. C. F. Reece (Technical) had set another record in the six miles run on the Friday night. Four athletes won two titles. P. Cates (Ashburton) won both the 220 and 440 yards hurdles. R. G. Ball (University) won the shot put and discus throw, P. S. Price retained his long jump and hop, step and jump titles, and J. R. Hysloo (Polytechnic) added the 20 kilometres road walk to the 5000 metre title that he won two weeks ago. Scoring 58 points, University retained the inter-club championship from Technical, 29 points. Other major placings were: Polytechnic, 15; Ashburton and New Brighton, 13 each; High School, 12; Olympic, 10.

Javelin Record A former national junior title holder. Watson made one of the best javelin throws ever done in New Zealand when he threw 195 ft 6Jin, to break the former record of 186 ft 4£in made by A. E. Grayburn in 1952. Watson’s distance has been bettered only once at a national title meeting, and' that was in 1936, when C. P. Clegg (Auckland) threw 195 ft HJin. The official New Zealand resident record is held by S. Lay at 206 ft 6in. A first year senior, D. Beauchamp (University) earned his 880 yards title in the stiffest tussle of the meeting. Beauchamp’s time, lmin 57.45ec, was the best done at Rugby Park this season. The race, a real crowd pleaser, was a University affair. The first four to finish were University men—and all were faster than two minutes.

McGuire had a good win in the mile in the morning in 4min 19sec, the best time by a Canterbury runner this season. The pacemaking for nearly three-quarters of the race was done by the High School junior, B. W. H. McStay, who would have been a strong contender for a junior title at Hamilton had he been available. McGuire moved strongly over the last lap to win by 20 yards from McStay, who ran his b'est time of 4inin 22.65ec. The 440 yards was run in 63.8 sec, the half-mile in 2min B.Bsec, and the three-quarter mile in 3min 16.4 sec. McStay also gave a very creditable performance in the three miles, in which he finished second in 14min 56.65ec. McStay again led for the greater part of the distance from the defending title-holder, J. K. Macdonald (University) The rest of the field were soon left well behind. Macdonald applied the pressure with three laps to go and drew away to win in 14min 49.8 sec. First Steeplechase A new event on the programme, the 3000 metre steeplechase drew good support. A former Canterbury runner, K. E. Williams (Otago) was a guest competitor, and he won in 9mm 25sec. Williams is not eligible to hold the title, and this was won by B. Curie (Olympic), the former junior mile record holder, whose time was lOmin 10.6 sec. Williams was still affected by the leg injury which handicapped him in the six miles' on Friday evening and he did not run or hurdle with his usual freedom. If he were to concentrate. the steeplechase would give Williams his best opportunity to qualify for Olympic selection. Sprint Titles The sprint titles were well distributed individually and on a club basis. T. A. Leonard (Temuka) was the best beginner in both the 100 and 220 yards races, and held the lead for most of the distance in both races. P. J. Morrison (Toe H) finished very strongly over the last 20 yards to take the 100 yards title in a very tight finish. The first three were all timed at 10.3 sec. M. A. Courtney (Technically in the inside lane, just headed Leonard in the second from out-

side lane, m the furlong. Both these runners were credited with 23sec. Leonard is one of the best sprinters the province has had, but last year he was restricted by injuries, and this season his training hgs been limited by business commitments. In the quarter-mile, P. Davies (High School) in the second lane, had the outside runners, gathered in after 100 yards. He coasted down the back and finished strongly to fight off a determined challenge by R. Gaskell (Technical). Abbreviations used in the results are:— Ashburton (A.), Canterbury Club (C.), Greymouth (G.), High School (H.S.), Marist (M.), New Brighton (N. 8.
