JUNIOR AND WOMEN’S EVENTS
FOUR RECORDS BROKEN (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. March 4.
Miss Joy Crotty (Waikato) was the cutstanding competitor in the New Zealand women’s and junior athletic championships at Hamilton yesterday. She retained her 75 yards title in B.ssec, time equalling the New Zealand record.
Second in the event in the two previous years. P. Lamont (Auckland) won the 100 yards junior championship in 10.2 sec from another Aucklander, P. Cunningham. A New Zealand record was established in the junior hop, step, and jump, when B. Norris (Auckland) covered 48ft lOiin, compared with the record of 46ft 10? in set by M. D. Watson (Canterbury) in 1952. Another junior record was broken when M. Jeffries (Auckland) threw the javelin 188 ft lin. The previous record was 187 ft 3in. M. Earwalker gained two junior titles for Southland—the first that centre had gained. In the 440 yards, he broke the New Zealand record. There was a surprise in the junior long jump when the favourite. B. Norris, was beaten by B. Robinson (Auckland). Robinson set a New Zealand record of 23ft lin. The old record of 22ft 4in was established in 1948.

Scott, a former Waikato distance runner, broke the New Zealand, three-quarter-mile record in a special attempt at Hamilton yesterday. He ran a magnificent race. His time was 2min 56.65ec, compared with the record of 2min 59.25ec established by M. Halberg. The result was: N. Scott 1, W. Baillie 2. P. Penlington 3.
