ST. DAVID’S DAY
CELEBRATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH The Red Dragon, the national flag of Wales, was flown from a mast over the Christchurch City Council chambers for the first time yesterday to mark St. David’s Day. It was an appropriate place to display the flag, because two members of the council are Welshmen. They are Cr. G. Manning, the Deputy-Mayor, and Cr. J. E. Jones, who presented the flag to the council when he returned from a visit to his homeland last year. Welshmen in many parts of the world paid homage to their patron saint yesterday. In Christchurch, the Cambrian Society, who has observed St. David’s Day since 1898, held a gathering to honour the flag. All those who attended wore the national emblem, the leek. A service will be held in Christchurch Cathedral on Sunday which will be similar to the service held every year in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. The Rev. K. Schollar will be the preacher, and the service will be conducted by the Rev. I. Hopkins. Welsh hymns will be sung, and the lessons will be in Welsh. A choral festival will also be held on Sunday. On Saturday the Welsh Society will hold a social evening.
