MR QUIRINO DEAD
FORMER PRESIDENT OF PHILIPPINES

A former President of the Philippines, Mr Elpido Quirino, died at his home today at the age of 65, the presidential press office announced. The former President had been suffering from high blood pressure. Mr Quirino assumed the Presidency upon the death of President Manuel
Roxas in 1948. when the republic was 21 months old. He lost office to President Ramon Magsaysay in the 1953’ Presidential election. During World War II the Japanese tried to lure Quirino into their puppet government. He refused. Just before the end of the war his wife and three of their five children were massacred by the Japanese.
