Rocks from Antarctica

Among the deck cargo on the icebreaker U.S.S. Edisto when she arrived at Wellington from ths Antarctic was half a ton of Antarctic rock. The captain (Commander R. W. Luther) said that the New Zealand Ross Sea Committee had asked for some rocks from Antarctica to be sold as paperweights. The money received from the sales would go into the funds for next year’s New Zealand Antarctic expedition. “We were just about to leave when we received the message.” said Commander Luther. “A shore party picked up the rocks from around Shackleton’s hut at Cape Royds.” The press attache at the United States Embassy (Mr Van Roberts) said the scheme had been publicised in the United States and requests for the paper weights, some with money enclosed, had already been received from America by the Embassy.—(P.A.)
