A traffic officer patrolling the highways near Oamaru recently saw an old model tourer car travelling about 15 miles an hour along the main highway with a man sitting on the bonnet, but no one behind the driving wheel. In the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court, when the man on the bonnet was subsequently charged with driving in a dangerous manner, he explained he had been driving the car with his hands behind him. The traffic officer said when he signalled the defendant to stop, the man clambered on top of the bonnet, over the windscreen into the driving seat. The Magistrate fined him £7 10s.
