WEST INDIANS AT NAPIER

CRICKET

Match With Hawke’s Bay. Drawn LOW SCORING ON DRYING PITCH (New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, March 1. After a day full of incident, the West Indies cricket team drew with Hawke’s Bay today after the home team had appeared to be near outright defeat. First Hawke’s Bay was dismissed for 52, and then the West Indies had to struggle to double the home team’s score. With two hours remaining the tourists tried to force a win, and at one stage Hawke’s Bay was six down for 50, but bright batting by two former Plunket Shield players, D. Brian and T. P. Reaney, the latter playing in his final representative match, saved the day. Hawke’s Bay was all out in its second innings for 132.

Without E. D. Weekes, the West Indian batting revealed a hitherto unexpected brittleness on a drying wicket. -The first 75 minutes produced only 45 runs. Half the West Indian side was back in the pavilion with the total at 28, and a repetition of the Hawke’s Bay collapse seemed likelv. However, Binns and Roberts scored 46 runs for the sixth wicket. Both went with the score at 74. and one run later Atkinson was snapped up behind the wicket to give the slow bowler. Totty, his second wicket in two overs. Goddard and Depeiza looked well set when the latter went down the wicket to Totty, missed, and was stumped. The last man. King, was bowled with the total at 105.

R. W. Blair, omitted from the New Zealand team for the third test at Wellington on Saturday, bowled with fire and accuracy at the outset of the West Indies innings, getting a good deal of life out of the wicket and troubling the batsmen frequently. He took three quick wickets, two of them clean bowled. Totty found plenty of response in the wicket for his leg breaks. Hawke’s Bay Second Innings

Even with time against them, the West Indians were looking for an outright win when Hawke’s Bay began its second innings. The opening attack of King and Edun was a mere formality—though Edun bowled Axford with the total at nine—and the Atkinson-Sobers combination, which had caused such havoc in the morning, was quickly restored. The move succeeded, for four wickets were soon down for 22 runs. Sobers taking the wickets, of both Fisher and Ki veil. Atkinson was not bowling with his earlier devil, however, and with Dine and Reaney threatening to make a stand, Smith was brought on to join Sobers in an all-spin attack. In his second over Smith bowled Dine, and Hawke’s Bay was 44 for five. Reaney brought up the 50 in 67 minutes by lifting Sobers high to long-on for four, but Blair, who tried a big hit off Smith, was caught by Roberts at deep square leg. Strong driving by Brian took Hawke s Bav past the West Indian total before Atkinson briefly took over from Sobers. Jteaney hooked him for four, and Brian straight drove him for six, and Sobers was restored to the attack. Brian was in scoring mood, however, and lifted a half-volley from Smith over the midwicket boundary for six. The pressure was now off, ana tne final half-hour developed into a picnic atmosphere, marked chiefly by the elation of Binns—far from a recognised bowler at taking the wicket of Reaney, and the hardly less concealed amazement oi Pairaudeau at his bowling Brian.
