LINCOLN HURRING’S PERFORMANCES
, INCLUSION IN GAMES TEAM URGED (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 1. "Lincoln Hurring’s swimming has been sensational this winter, and I expect him to be recording th es well under the Olympic records at the time of the next games in Melbourne in November,’’ saj’s a recent letter from the swimming coach of lowa University (Mr W. A. Armbruster). The letter, to the secretary of the Otago Swimming Centre, was read at a meeting of the centre last night. “I do hope your committee and your country will do everything possible to send this swimmer to the 1956 Olympic Games,” the letter concluded. In recommending Hurring, Mr Armbruster referred to him as one of the top backstroke swimmers in the world. “In my estimation Hurring is the most likely candidate to win the Olympic Games 100 metres backstroke title, for he has turned in some of the most amazing times of his career this year.” he said. “He now holds the American and intercollegiate backstroke records for 200 vards. and his best times in our long course, which is an indoor pool, are: 100 vards in 57sec. 200 yards ii. 2min 9sec, and 110 yards in Imin 6.45ec,” said Mr Armbruster. The chairman of the centre (Mr E. C Isaacs) recommended that Mr Armbruster’s letter be forwarded to the chairman of the New Zealand Swimming Council with the recommendation that favourable consideration be given to Hurring as a candidate in the New Zealand swimming! team. This move was approved by the centre.
