NEW PAPER FOR “THE TIMES”
Newsprint Rationing To Continue (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON. February 17. “The Times" newspaper Intended to use exclusively a type of paper other than newsprint, the President of the Board of Trade (Mr Peter Thorneycroft) said in a written answer to a question in the House of Commons yesterday. His statement confirmed rumours which had been circulating in Fleet street for many months. Mr Thorneycroft gave news of “The Times” plans when he answered a question by a Conservative member, Mr William Shepherd, about the future rationing of newsprint for the British press. He said all newspapers except one had asked that rationing by statutory control should be continued for the time being, and had told him that they were unable to safeguard the position of small users, which the Government had made a condition of its plan to remove controls on newsprint and the size of newspapers. A newspaper proauction authority said last night that "The Times” planned to use mechanical printing paper, a heavier quality magazine type paper. The cost was about 50 per cent, more than newsprint, but it was not rationed in Britain. Mr Thorneycroft added: "In such circumstances. I have decided that the necessary order continuing control should be laid before Parliament. I i propose, however, to license an in- ! creased number of pages for The Times.’ I am doing this because this newspaper now intends to use exclusively a type of paper other than newsprint which will be obtained entirely from a new source, and will release to other newspapers all the newsprint it would otherwise have used. i
