SCOTT’S STORES MAY BE USED
VISIT TO HUTS IN ROSS SEA AREA Lieutenant - Commander Michael Foster, R.N., who, with Dr. Trevor Hatherton, suggested that RearAdmiral George Dufek order the members of the United States Antarctic expedition not to take souvenirs from Scott’s and Shackleton’s huts in the Ross Sea area, said yesterday on his return in the Glacier that one of the huts might be opened by the New Zealanders when they went south next summer. There are three huts in the area, and it is the one at Cape Evans, used by Scott on his second expedition, that may be inspected by the Dominion expedition. Lieutenant - Commander Foster said that the hut was also used by Shackleton’s Ross Sea party, which was marooned there when its ship broke away in March, 1915. “It is now half snowed up,” he said, “and the only entrance to it is through a one-foot square broken window frame. Only three men were in that hut this time, and I boarded up the window as a protection against further weather damage.” Shackleton’s first expedition hut at Cape Royds was also in fairly good condition, although snowed up. and Scott’s hut at Hut Point, used on his first expedition, was also banked up with snow. There was no food in the other huts, but the New Zealanders might use the food from the Cane Evans hut while they were in the area, said Lieutenant-Commander Foster.
