REDUCTION IN TERRITORIAL UNITS
Sir,—l read with great disappointment of the decision of the Minister of Defence to reduce the size of the territorial force units in New Zealand. including the 3rd Armoured Regiment. It seems a futile waste of time and expenditure to train men and the regiment as a Regiment and then disband it. It is a great pity that the 3rd Armoured is one of the two armoured regiments to be annihilated as it has a long history, indeed, one of the longest in the New Zealand Army, and is. I believe, the “crack” armoured regiment in New Zealand. It is associated with the Old Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, the Otago Mounted Rifles and the Nelson - Marlborough - West Coast Mounted Rifles, which performed with such distinction in the First World War. and it would seem that their names are to be forgotten. Let the 3rd Armoured Regiment remain.— Yours, etc.. PRESENT MEMBER 3 A.R.M.D. February 17, 1956.
