THE OLD MAN’S GAME?
Sporting statisticians are not confined to cricketers. An enthusiastic bowler, determined to demonstrate that bowls is not quite the relaxing pursuit it is sometimes thought to be, has uncovered some startling facts about the energy required to play bowls. Taking as his basis the Christchurch champion of champion pairs tournament which starts to- * day, which will require six games of 21 ends, and assuming the average bowl a. 31b 4oz, each player will' deliver a load totalling 14cwt - 2lqrs. The leads, who have to kick back the bowls at the end of each head, will shift nearly three tons of bou'ls. If the only walking done was from head to head, the players would total the best part of three miles. The successful pair in this tournament will certainly earn its distinction.
