PAY INCREASES FOR TANNERS
NEW AWARD ISSUED Tanners in Canterbury. Otago and Southland have been awarded a minimum wage increase of Id an hour in a new award issued by the Arbitration Court. The minimum weekly wage for youths between 16 and 21 years of ace has been increased by 3s 6d. The increases are subject to the Arbitration Court’s 13 per cent, general wage increase. Workers required to enter flues or back-end smoke boxes which are laid off for inspection for the purpose of cleaning, will be paid 5s a day extra instead of 4s. Those required to enter drains and filters to clean them will receive an extra Is a day. • The provisions of the award also ’■pquire employers to supply two overalls and one pair of boots yearly to workers in tan yards, lime yards, and wet places, and to drum hands, fleshers scudders and unhairers. The award, incltiding. the operative date relating to wages, embodies the terms of settlement arrived at by the assessors in conciliation council. It will take effect from February 1. 1956. and will continue in force until May 31, 1957.
