Victoria trounced Western Australia today and has finished second in this years Sheffield Shield. Western Australia added only 40 runs to its overnight total, and was all out for 181 in its second innings. Victoria scored 525 run? in the first innings, and Western Australia 152. Sixteen of the ?0 Western Australian wickets went to the Victorian spinners, lan Johnson (seven for 52), Jack Hill (five for 84), and a left-arm bowler. Lindsay Kline (four for 89). Final positions in the shield table are:— New South Wales. 20 points, 62.8 per cent; Victoria, 20. 57.1; Queensland. 14, 40; Western Australia, 5, 25; South Australia, 8, 22.8.

TRIBUTE PAID TO SPORTSMANSHIP A tribute to the sportsmanship of the New Zealand cricketers in India has been paid by an Indian in Madras, in a letter to the High Commissioner for India in New Zealand and Australia (General K. M. Cariappa). General Cariappa forwarded extracts from the letter to the New Zealand Cricket Council. “The Indians had a comfortable victory in the final test, but the New Zealanders have created a tremendous impression on the public by their very sportsmanlike behaviour,” the Indian said. “It is reported that they are about the best that has ever visited India so far. Members were so well behaved and were so friendly.” The High Commissioner added that those views were fully endorsed by himself. and he thanked the New Zealand Cricket Council for the trouble taken to make the tour possible. DEPARTURE OF TEAM DELAYED EXTRA MATCH MAY BE PLAYED The departure of the West Indies cricket team from New Zealand has been delayed from March 17 to March 25. and the New Zealand Cricket Council is at present considering the possibility of arI ranging an extra match. The itinerary as at present arranged has a game against Northland on March 15 and 16 as the tour’s final fixture.
WEEKES RECOVERING FROM INJURY Tlae West Indies batsman, E. D. Weekes, who is in Christchurch in advance of the rest of the team to receive treatment for an injured leg, was reported yesterday to be improving, and he is almost certain to play in the second test on Saturday. The umpires for the match were announced yesterday. They will be Messrs J. A. Cowie, of Wellington, the former test bowler, and W. Gwynne, of Otago. The manager of the New Zealand team for the Christchurch test will be Mr J. C. Saunders, of Christchurch. Mr M. F. Pengelly will be manager for the third test at Wellington, and Mr G. Burgess for the fourth test at Auckland. AIR FORCE TOURNEY WOODBOURNE BEATS HOBSONVILLE (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, February 15. Woodbourne beat Hobsonville by 68 runs on the first innings in the final of the Air Force inter-station cricket championship in the three-day match concluded at Blenheim today. Woodbourne scored 208 and 176, Hobsonville 140 and 187 for eight.
