MARATHON STARTING TIME

AUCKLAND TO LODGE PROTEST An Auckland protest on the starting time of the marathon at the New Zealand athletic championships to be held in Christchurch on March 16 and 17 is almost certain to be discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury centre this evening. Canterbury had nominated the starting time to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association as 11 o’clock on the Saturday morning. A Press Association message reports the Auckland centre as stating that running in the middle of the day is a crippling time for marathon runners to compete, and that it will recommend to the national association that the start should not be earlier than 2 p.m. “Our experience this year with an extremely hot summer has been that the hottest time of the day has nearly always come after 2 p.m..” said Mr J. C., Harbut. a member of the Canterbury executive and a former president of the New Zealand Association, when the message was referred to him.
