The Hon. Mrs Tahu Rhodes will arrive in Wellington by the Rangitiki on February 23, and will visit her son, Mr Terence Rhodes, “Palmside,” North Canterbury. She plans to stay in New Zealand till the end of June. Miss Hazel Halliday, Kahu road, Fendalton, returned to Christchurch this week after a holiday visit to Great Britain and Europe. Miss Irene Armstrong (Melbourne), who for six years has been secretary to Mr H. G. Wheeler, secretary of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, has taken the opportunity while in Christchurch of visiting her cousins, Mr and Mrs W. Bell, of Merivale. In July, Miss Armstrong plans to sail from Australia for Canada, where her marriage to Mr Alton Trufitt. also of Melbourne, will take place in Montreal. After about 18 months in Canada, where they will be stationed, they expect to return to Melbourne to make their permanent home. The first meeting of the year of the Opawa-St. Martins sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held at the home of Mrs F. H. Polhill, Locarno street. Plans were made for the annual meeting early next month. A roster of helpers for the Good Neighbour Service for the coming month was drawn up. The sale of more “bricks” for the building fund was reported. Several new garments were handed in. Mrs G. Nelham Watson presided. Mrs Brett Wood presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Garden Club held at the home of Mrs J. Ferrier, Heaton street. Later members visited the gardens of Mr and Mrs J. R. Templin. Heaton street, and Mrs J. A. Redpath, Glandovey road. Competition results were:—Presentation box of flowers, A class, Mrs J. Russell 2, Mrs H. E. W. Roberton 2; B class, Mrs A. M. Hutchinson; best blooms, A class. Mrs Russell; B class, Mrs A. Joyce T, Mrs Brett Wood 2, Mrs R. Harman 3.

The culture of carnations was described by Mr W. A. Barrell at the February meeting of the Stratford Garden Club held at the home of Mrs P. S. Godfrey, Beverley street. Competitions judged by Mrs Barrell resulted:—decorative, A class: Mrs H..S. Feast 1, Mrs G. Louisson 2. Mrs E. F. Ward 3: B class. Mrs C. C. T. Burns 1, Mrs J. Sinclair 2. Mrs I. Cromb 3. Floral arrangements were demonstrated by Mrs Webb at the “monthly meeting of the Tai Tapu Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs I. G. Dulieu, Greenpark. Competitions resulted:— Arrangement of five flowers of the meeting of the Tai Tapu Garden Club, same variety and colour: A class, Mrs H. A. Kennedy 1, Mrs J. Fiecken 2, Mrs A. Powell 3; B class, Mrs Scorgie 1, Miss F. Moir 2. Mrs L. Dulieu 3. Three varieties of annuals: Mrs I. Dulieu 1, Mrs H. Meyer 2, Mrs Powell 3. Lettuce: Mrs W. Schaffer 1, Mrs Meyer 2. Mrs Kennedy presided. A pleasant afternoon social was held recently in the clubrooms of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Pensioners’ Association. The president of the Christchurch Pensioners’ Welfare Society (Mr W. H. Larcombe) unveiled a framed photograph of the late Sir John McKenzie, who had the welfare of the aged among his many interests. Among the honoured guests were Lady McKenzie, Mrs Pryce Jones, and Miss N. Scott. The musical programme was provided by Mrs G. Harrell (songs), Mrs Colthart and Mrs K. Swallow (vocal duets), and Mrs Bielby (recitations). The accompanist was Mrs Hilda Reeve. Th cultivation of lilies was outlined by Mr S. G. Prebble at the monthly meeting of the Ham Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs R. Vincent, Girvan street. Competitions resulted:— Decorative, jug of flowers: class A, Mrs D. Guild 1. Miss G. Hesarty 2. Mrs F. Irvine 3: class B, Mrs R. J. Dendle 1, Mrs M. J. P. Glasgow 2. One lily: Mrs E. Hume 1, Miss Hegarty 2, Mrs Irvine 3. Best bloom: Mrs A. T. Gainsford 1, Mrs M.
