AUSTRALIAN FACTORY PRODUCTION
Australian factory production reached a record level in October, 1955, according to the Australian and. New Zealand Bank’s production index. The index, at a provisional figure of 157 in October, 1955, was 3 per cent, above its September level, and 11 per cent, higher than in October, 1954. Nearly every section of industry contributed to the increase.
Metal working industries, the most heavily weighted group in the index, recorded the steepest rise—23 per cent. —during the year. A substantially higher output of low horse-power engines was a big factor in this increase Food, drink and tobacco production increased 16 per cent., meat canning and curing 30 per cent., floor coverings 22 per cent. All sections of the clothing and textiles group, except cotton textiles. were lower and basic materials showed little change.
