The first black marlin of the season was landed off the Bay of Islands on Tuesday. Fishing from Mr P. Edmunds’ launch Albacora, Mr Ivor Davis, of Auckland, hauled his 257-pound catch on board after a 20-minute fight. Last season’s first black marlin weighed 645 pounds, and was the year’s biggest. Mr Davis’ swordfish is probably the first ever caught in New Zealand waters on a synthetic line. With only seven days’ fishing left, interest is mounting in the Bay of Islands Swordfish and Mako Shark Club’s holiday gamefishing tournament held during December and January. The present leaders in the £175 competition are: K. B. Wilson (Lady Doreen), 3041 b; G. Bristow (Alma G.), 2681 b; G. T. Truscott (Pirate), 2661 b.
