HEATER GUARDS

MINISTER PROPOSES REGULATIONS

The enforced provision of guards on electric, gas, and oil heaters under new regulations is under consideration by the Government, according to a letter from the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr D. J. Eyre) to the Associated Chambers of Commerce which has been received in Christchurch. Mr Eyre says he is concerned about the number of ‘‘disturbing accidents” to children, invalids, and older people through burns from heaters. The Minister. says there is no suitable legislation to cover all heating equipment and, in the meantime, he proposes to use powers under section II of the Standards Act by which regulations can be made by Order-in-Council prohibiting the sale of dangerous goods unless they conform to standard specifications. Thes temporary regulations would probably prohibit the sale of heaters with unsatisfactory guards. He invited the Associated Chambers of Commerce to express their views and any objections to the use of these powers as an emergency expedient. When the next session of Parliament opened, the Minister said he proposed to introduce amending regulations dealing with the matter in another way.
