SECOND FLIGHT TO ANTARCTIC
DAKOTAS’ ATTEMPT CANCELLED
PLANES TO RETURN TO U.S. TOMORROW
The proposed flight to the Antarctic by two American Dakota aircraft which were to have left Taieri for McMurdo Sound this month has been cancelled by the United States Navy command. The Dakotas, which are now at the Royal New Ztealand Air Force station. Wigram, will leave Christchurch on return to their base at Patuxent River, Maryland, tomorrow. The first plane is scheduled to take off at 9 a.m. on the first leg of its long journey. It will fly direct to Nandi. The aircraft will be piloted by Lieutenant-Commander W. Frankiewicz. The second aircraft, piloted by Lieutenant-Commander C. S. Shinn, will leave at 1.30 p.m. for Whenuapai and- will depart from Whenuapai for Nandi at 6 p.m. The second Neptune patrol bomber will leave Wigram this morning at 9 o’clock. It will be commanded by Lieutenant-Commander J. W. Entrikin. Four aircraft of the American Antarctic expedition’s squadron will be left at Wigram when the Dakotas and the Neptune have flown. They will be two Albatrosses and two Skymasters. Routine checking and maintenance is being done on these aeroplanes and departure dates have not yet been fixed for them.
