NORTH CANTERBURY POWER DEMAND
MANY IRRIGATION PUMPS REQUESTED The water shortage caused by the recent long spell of dry weather has brought many requests for the installation of irrigation pumps in the North Canterbury Electric Power Board’s area. The engineer-secretary (Mr A. Buckingham) said at a meeting of the board yesterday that to attend to all the requests would mean that the board’s staff would be doing nothing else. All cases would be treated on their merits, he said. Power consumption in the board’s area during the last quarter of 1955 was 16.4 per cent, more than in the same period in 1954, Mr Buckingham reported. He said that the increase reflected the improved power supply position during the year. During December more new consumers were connected than in any single month for several years. There were 61 new connexions, compared with 55 in December, 1954. In addition 46 extensions were made to existing connexions.
