ARMS RAID BY REBELS
Demands By Masked Terrorists (Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 23. It was reported today from Nicosia that Eoka “Union with Greece” terrorists wearing masks and carrying arms knocked on the doors of houses in many parts of Cyprus during the night to demand shotguns and ammunition. The Cyprus Government acted swiftly after the first reports last night that terrorists were scouring the island for weapons. Ail Cypriots were ordered by the Government to hand over shotguns by midday tomorrow in the interests of public safety. It is estimated that 20,000 shotguns are privately owned in Cyprus for hunting. Nicosia, the capital, was the first part of the island to report the arms raids. In some cases, the terrorists posed as officials. Others made threats at gunpoint. . Cyprus radio warned people to take due precaution when answering doors. All the guns at two villages 22 miles east of Nicosia —Kai Ogrea and Khartcha—were seized by the night intruders. Five villagers in the Kyrenia district of north Cyprus yielded 25 guns in the sweep.
