CANTERBURY TITLES

SWIMMING

O. SNOEP COMPLETES RECORD DOUBLE

FAST BACKSTROKE TIME BY GRAHAM MCFADDEN Fourteen new record times were set at the 1956 Canterbury swimming championships. half of them on the second night on Saturday, when the championships were concluded at the Centennial Pool

An outstanding sprint double was completed by Otto Snoep. of the Spreydon club, when he took Bsec off the previous best time for the 55 yards freestyle race after having broken the 110 yards record on Wednesday night. Snoep set a new mark of 27.8 sec in the first heat in a brilliant swim, and finished clear of the field.

Five minutes later the young -Elmwood swimmer. .J. D. Graham, swam an outstanding race in, the second heat, and ran .Isec inside the 1955 record of 28.6 sec. B McNeilage (Beckenham), who had been the co-holder of the record with Snoen. was second to Graham in 28.7 sec.

The final was an exciting race, but in slower time after Snoep and Graham had swum strongly in a fast-paced 220 yards. Snoep touched first in 28.8 sec. but the fight was between McNeilage and Graham for second place. They appeared to touch together Judges gave the second place to McNeilage, but the watches showed both swimmers to have done the distance in 29.45ec.

The best performance of the night was by a 17-year-old Spreydon swimmer, Graham McFadden, who was competing as a senior for the first time. McFadden started the 440 yards backstroke event with the record-holder, D. O. McGiffen (Spreydon), and finished first in smin 39sec, 2sec outside the winning time for the event at the last national title meeting in Lower Hutt. In the last four months McFadden has teen carrying out an intensive training schedule with this race in mind, and his hard work paid dividends. After an off-season last year A. R. Peters (Spreydon) showed a return to form by winning the 110 yards breaststroke championship and breaking his two-year-old record time of 83.4 sec by I.6sec. G. Pratley, who beat him last year, did not compete. Three events after the breaststroke race, Peters competed in the gruelling and ugly 220 yards butterfly event against K. Tourell (Kaiapoi), who set the record of 3min sfi.3sec in 1953, and N Roake (Spreydon). a former Wellington swimmer racing in Christchurch for the first time Peters and

Roake fought a dogged battle, but Peters, who had been tired out in* his previous race, could not stand the pace. Even so, he finished a creditable 3.4 sec behind Roake’s new record mark-of 3min 31scc. Peters, however, was disqualified for swimming an incorrect stroke, and Tourell, who finished well back, was placed second. Teams from Elmwood, Spreydon, and Christchurch took part in the 220 yards flying squadron race, in which a new Canterbury record was set, Spreydon (P. R. Garratt, J. Snoep, J. D, Graham. O. Snoep) broke two minutes by relaying the distance in Imin 57.65ec. The old record, also held by Spreydon, was 2min o.Bsec. The three teams were remarkably even, and until O. Snoep left his block for the last length there was no more than a foot between them. Snoep outpaced the former Canterbury sprint champion, R. Hatch well (Christchurch) and the young intermediate. C. Bidwell (Elmwood), and finished yards in front. Hatchwell took second placing for his team by a touch. Results:— In the results below abbreviations are as follows: Beck. (Beckenham), Ch.
