DOMINION CONFERENCE OPENS

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 22. The triennial conference of the New Zealand Federation of University Women was opened in Auckland on Saturday. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Luxford) welcomed the delegates. Overseas visitors to the conference include Dr. Conception Aguila, Mrs Rosita Penera, and Mrs Lourdes Echauz, all of Manila. The chief emphasis at the conference is on Far Eastern affairs.

An Australian visitor is Mrs R. A. Forsaith, of Perth, a vice-president of the International Federation, who gave an illustrated address on the recent federation council meeting in Switzerland.

Mrs H. C. Goldsmith, wife of the United States Consul in Auckland, is an American observer at the conference.

In her opening address, the retiring president of the New Zealand federation (Mrs E. I. A. Macdonald) said the federation, with its 43 national groups, did its share in the task of preparing the way for the better organisation of peace in the world. Today’s programme included a church parade, a drive through the Waitakere Ranges, and a buffet supper at the home of the president. The conference will continue until Thursday.
