Cutler (Tai Tapu), and Miss Kilbride and Miss Lewton (Southbridge). A talk and demonstration on budding roses were given by Mr D. White. Competitions resulted: — Floral hat, Miss M. Watling 1, Mrs J. Mrs Sunanda Narayan, the only woman in India to carry out wool research, has just completed a tour of the Dominion’s wool research institutions. She is the officer in charge of the wool research laboratory in Jaipur, and the wife of the head of the Sheep and Wool Improvement Department of the Government of Rajasthan, India’s leading woolgrowing State. Rajasthan produces about a third of the country’s total wool. Much of what she has learned of New Zealand’s wool research problems, Mrs Narayan hopes to applv in India, in order to devise a policy for farmers to get the most , out of their sheep. A Sydney hairdresser, Peter Hanlon, during a recent visit to Columbia studios in Hollywood studied at close quarters the tresses of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable —the hair neatly boxed and labelled and stored away. He watched Helen Hunt working. She is in charge of the hairdressing and make-up department. “It was very interesting, but not my line, because most of the work is done with false hair. The supply is kept in four enormous rooms. Rita Hayworth’s hair is naturally jet black, and it has to be done every five days when she is making a film,” he said. In England, at one of Mayfair’s salons, he worked with Rene, whose No. 1 client is Princess Margaret. There are only four clients whose hair Rene will dress outside the salon. They are Princess Margaret, the Duchess of Kent, Princess Alexandra, and Marlene Dietrich.
