NEW TRAFFIC MANAGER’S CAREER Mr E. W. Hayton, D. 5.0., will take over his new post of District Traffic Manager for the Railways Department in Christchurch tomorrow. He succeeds Mr E. F. Farr, who will retire today after 40 years’ service. Mr Hay ton, who joined the Railways Department as a clerical cadet at Christchurch in December, 1918, has had wide experience in all phases of

traffic operations in both islands. Mr Hayton became a stationmaster at Riverdale and served in that position till December, 1939. He then joined the Ist Echelon of thfcr 2nd N.Z. Expeditionary Force. After six years war service he resumed duty with the Railways Department in Christchurch in -January, 1946. From June, 1949, until January, 1952, Mr Hayton was the railways transport licensing officer at Invercargill. From there he was promoted to his last position as the department’s transport licensing officer, Wellington. Mr Hayton, who rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel during the war, established and built up the Provost Corps with the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the Middle East. Mr Hayton was awarded the D.S.O. for his outstanding service in the attack at Alameiri in October, 1942, and the subsequent advance to Nofilia.
