MINOR EVENTS AT WASHDYKE

GLOBETROTTER CAUSES SURPRISE Globetrotter, which graduated from maiden class with a win over the promising Honest Charles at Westport on Boxing Day, caused a maior upset when he led from the end of the .first furlong in the Tekapo Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. Most, of the field lost their chances in the first furlong and soon after the horses were spread over almost a furlong.

Globetrotter set a very strong pace and was closely attended throughout the race by Cossack Post. These two horses were clear of Francora racing to the straight, with Young Reta and Quo Vadis handiest of the others.

Globetrotter did not look like surrendering his lead and he held off Cossack Post bv a length. The latter was having his first start since joining J. B. Pringle's team and he looks set for an early win.

Quo Vadis made up some ground over the last three furlongs to take third place 10 lengths from Cossack Post. Francora was six lengths back fourth, five lengths in front of Scottish Choice, with Young Reta right up next, clear of Capull.

Gay Tune Stays On Gay Tune led practically all the way in the Gleniti Handicap and she stayed on too well for the others. Beehive was first out, but at the end of three furlongs Gay Tune took over. She was still in control racing to the straight, where she was two lengths in front of Prepared, with a length to Jaquine. Happy Sandy. Quite Contrary and Victory were eight lengths back at the head of the remainder. Gay Tune did not look like being caught and she won by two lengths.

Quite Contrary was an unlucky second. She lost ground at the start, but was handy with about three furlongs to run when Our Jane broke in front of her and checked her. But for that she would have made the winner’s task much more difficult.

Prepared was never very far away in the running and she trotted her best race for some time to take third place, a length in front of Jaquine. Happy Sandy was two lengths back fifth, clear of Victory, with Idealist next.

Win for Marshall Craig Marshall Craig gained a long overdue win when he finished too well for his opponents in the Fairview Handicap. His owner, C. F. King, who had trained and driven Sure Maggie to win the previous race, had Marshall Craig handily placed all the way. Gold Cloud took the lead from Pibroch with nine furlongs to run and racing to the straight she was closely attended by Floreate and Delaforce, with Johnny Derby. Marshall Craig and Fortune s Lady handy. Just when Delaforce looked in for a win, Marshall Craig finished fast along the outside and won going away by a length and a half. Delaforce paced a useful race for second after being very slow early. The hrst time he begins smartly, he should go close to winning. Floreate, which had every chance, was , .J 1 len ,S th , back third, a head in front of the unlucky Johnny Derby, which apx hp i "i heel of Delaforce’# W k i y nd bre , ak just short o* the post. .. worked clear, Johnny Derbv P retu rned a dividend'. Gold Cloud tired slightly to fifth, ahead of Macklin, Trojan and Grand March.
