FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM
Calcutta Sweep May Be Prominent MA REINE CHOSEN JN SECOND LEG (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 22. Calcutta Sweep and Ma Reine may help to improve the good record of South Island horses at the Wellington Cup meeting by winning the totalisator double on the final day at Trentham tomorrow.
Calcutta Sweep will be one of two South Island representatives in the first leg, the Summer Handicap. The distance is a mile and a half. Calcutta Sweep was an unlucky third in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, of the same distance, on Saturday. Ma Reine is probably capable of ending the meeting unbeaten. She will have a big following in the second leg, the City Handicap, on the strength of her success over the same distance in the Telegraph Handicap on January 14. Syntax should improve his record without trouble in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes, one mile and three furlongs. He will be opposed by Deceptive, Fox Myth, Idaho, and Hot Dropr which are well-performed older horses; but again his strongest opponent may be the Wingatui three-year-old. Ark Royal,- runner-up in the Gloaming Stakes. The weather was fine at Trentham today, and the track remains fast. Riding arrangements include:— N. B. Holland: Syntax, Genre, Lochie. W. J.
