REECE RUNS BEST MILE OF SEASON

ATHLETIC.

The former six-mile provincial champion C. F. Reece (Technical) ran his best mile and the best time of the season, when he cleared away from the field in the last lap to return 4min 23.8 sec during the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. The Macdonald brothers. Jim and John, shared the early pacemaking, the quarter-mile coming up in 63sec, the half in 2rfiin 13sec, and the threequarters' in 3min 23sec. At the bell Reece dashed to the front, and cutting out close to 60sec for the last lap, won by nearly 40 yards. The improving times recorded in middle-distance races since Christmas have been largely dependent on the willingness of J. D. Macdonald (University) to accept the role of pacemaker. It is time that other Canterbury men realised that they will need to force thfe pace in the middle stages if they wish to approach national standards.

In an attempt on the junior two mile record, the High School runner B. W. H z McStay fell well short of the mark with a time of 9min 54sec. The day, with a brisk south-easterly blowing, was not a favourable one, and without adequate opposition McStay was virtually a lone competitor running against time. McStay lost valuable time by not using the following wind in the back straight to advantage. Recently named as a possibility for the British Olympic team for Melbourne, P. Wells (Canterbury Club) maintained his consistent form by winning an invitation high jump with 6ft sin. The bar was lifted- to 6ft 7in. Wells narrowly missed clearing this height on his first two trials but was well short of it on his third attempt. Wells now lives at Amberley and his training has been handicapped by the lack of jumping facilities. Until re-

cently the only jumping he had was when he came to Christchurch at week-ends. Wells has now remedied this by providing a pit and jumping uprights in his backyard. The High School sprinter, P. G. Davies, continued as the best senior sprinter by taking the 100 yards in 10.7 sec and the 440 yards in 51.1 sec. Mrs D. May (University) had too much dash in the 100 yards for Miss M. Chamberlain (Technical), winning in 11.6 sec. In equally convincing fashion, Miss Chamberlain took the furlong in 26sec. Returning 2min 34.55ec in an attempt on the women’s 880 yards provincial record, Miss G. Williams (Olympic) missed by 3.2 sec. With large teams of athletes competing at the West’ Coast championships at Greymouth, fields were below the usual standards.
