SPEEDWAY RACES

ENGLAND AND N.Z. DRAW IN TEST After being four points behind at the start of the final heat in the England versus New Zealand test, held at the Aranui Speedway on Saturday evening. New Zealand was saved by the brilliant teamriding of Ron Moore and Peter Clarke, who between them scored five points. One point was gained by the English rider, Ken McKinley, who finished tnird. which gave both teams a total of 27 points, making the test result a draw. The test, which was the first series of teams races held at the stadium for some time, drew the largest crowd this season. Outstanding rider of the evening was the New Zealand captain, Moore, who. out of five starts, gained four firsts, which amounted to 12 points. In his fifth start he was forced to retire with chain trouble. He was ably supported by the Hastings rider, Clarke, who scored nine of New Zealand's points. Top rider for England was Ron Mountford, with nine points. England's captain. McKinley, and Eric Williams each gained eight points. From the beginning of the first heat, it was obvious that it would be a keenlyfought contest, and the result was in doubt right up to the final heat. The real team-racing of the evening took place in the final heat, when Moore, who was in the lead, let Clarke through. Moore holding off McKinley for the duration of the race. Moore passed Clarke coming up to the finish to cross the line first Williams, McKinley’s team-mate, retired early in the event. In the Arahui Handicap, W. Rees and K. Rees, father and son. crossed the line together to dead-heat for first plaee. M. Horton was third. G. Samuel driving off the front mark won tlie first three-quarter midget car race to be held at the stadium. Threequarter the size of normal midget cars, they are powered by racing motor-cycle engines.
