Inquiry Into Return Of Dr. John

(Rec. 8 p.m.) BERLIN, January 21. A judge of the West German Federal High Court has opened preliminary investigations into the case of Dr. Otto John, the former West German security chief, who went to East Germany in 1954 and returned last month, when he was arrested on suspicion of treason.

Treason cases are tried in the first instance by the Federal Court, which is normally a Court of Appeal. Dr. John is in prison. His detention is due to be reviewed shortly.
