HOUSE DAMAGED BY FIRE
MINOR OUTBREAKS YESTERDAY
Severe damage was done to a building and contents when fire broke out at the residence of Mr O. H. Greenwood, 12 Conference street, yesterday afternoon. A room and its contents in the home of Mr P. Kuzmack, next door, were also damaged by heat and smoke. One unit from the Central Fire Brigade answered a call received at 3.4 p.m. Two fire engines from the Central brigade helped to extinguish a grass fire on the railway line in Waterloo road, opposite Fulham street, Islington, at 7.42 a.m. yesterday. A fire tender from the Paparua County Council also fought the blaze. No damage was done. A fire in an 11.000-volt oil circuitbreaker in the Municipal Electricity Department’s sub-station at the corner of Moorhouse avenue and Montreal street was attended by three machines. The explosion caused a power failure in the area and also in the Christchurch Transport Board’s supply. Trolley-buses were brought to a stop, and diesel buses had to be used to maintain the service. Oil was flung from the circuit-breaker by the explosion. and there was dense black smoke. The cause is unknown.
At 11.1 a.m. one unit from the Central brigade answered a call to an oven fire at the residence of Mr J. C. Cox, 190 England street, Linwood. It was extinguished before any damage was done.
One unit from the Central brigade answered a call at 12.50 p.m. to a rubbish fire which had got out of control cn the property of Mr A. Gustason, 20 Armagh street. No damage was done.
A grass fire on the property of C. W. F. Hamilton, Ltd., near Lunn’s road, Riccarton, was extinguished by units from the Central and Sydenham brigades and the Paparua County Council’s fire tender early yesterday afternoon.
One unit from Woolston answered a call to the residence of Mr S. Rose, 711 Ferry road, when oil in a saucepan caught fire. Slight damage was done to the paintwork. A grass fire in New Brighton road, opposite Baker street, was extinguished by units from the Central and New Brighton fire brigades before any damage was done.
About 77 dozen empty bottles and 36 empty crates were destroyed when fire broke out in the Associated Bottle Company’s premises in Antigua street. Two units from the Central brigade answered the call, which was received at 8.35 p.m.
