SHELL DISPOSAL AT FANNING ISLAND

TEAM OF EXPERTS LBAVES N.Z. (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 19. A team of four experts from the Royal New Zealand Navy’s armament depot at Kauri Point, Auckland, left by air for Fanning Island, in the Gilbert and Ellice group, at the weekend. There they will supervise the disposal of shells and cordite charges stored on the remote island in 1941 as part of its defences. The team, which is headed by the Inspector of Naval Ordnance (Mr W. H. Minchall), was made available at the request of Cable and Wireless. Ltd., which maintains a cable station on the island. They were flown there in an aircraft made available by the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
