SUBVERSION IN IRAQ

“Assassination Aims Disclosed”

BAGDAD, January 8. Said Qazaz. Iraq’s Minister of' the Interior, reported in Parliament today that police had uncovered subversive activities in Iraq and elsewhere, directed by another Arab State, which he did not name.

He said a clandestine movement had come into being since Iraq started consultations with Turkey a year ago about the Bagdad Defence Pact, to which Britain belongs. The movement had the aim of assassinating Iraq's leading statesmen. Said Qazaz said that plotting against Iraqi statesmen was inspired by Adnan Alrawi, a native of Iraq working for Egypt’s Voice of the Arabs broadcasting station. Alrawi was deprived of his Iraqi nationality last year. The Interior Minister said subversive activities were conducted by two secret groups—Communists and extreme Nationalists—and were all directed against the Bagdad Pact.
