NEW RIOTS IN JORDAN

Protest Against Bagdad Pact

(N.Z. Press Association—Copynght)

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, January 8. Amman, the capital of Jordan, and that part of Jerusalem which is under Jordan s control have been put under curfew after demonstrations yesterday in which the American Consulate in Amman was attacked, according to a Jordan Government communique broadcast today by Damascus Radio. Arab Legion troops were called out to disperse the demonstrators, the communique said. The curfew would last until further notice.

Reports from neighbouring capitals yesterday said that there had been widespread rioting over the proposals that Jordan should join the Fagdad Pact linking Britain, Iraq, Persia, Turkey and Pakistan in Middle East defence.

The Jordan communique, however, said the incidents had been confined to Amman and Jerusalem and that elsewhere demonstrations were “for the most part peaceful.”
